Bread of Life -- Chapter 7:

Q. Are the souls of those who die in the state of justification saved, if they have not received Baptism of Water?

A. No. They are not saved.

Q. Where do these souls go if they die in the state of justification but have not received Baptism of Water?

A. I do not know.

Q. Do they go to Hell?

A. No.

Q. Do they go to Heaven?

A. No.

Q. Are there any such souls?

A. I do not know! Neither do you!

As I have pointed out numerous times, Father Feeney's Bread of Life was a polemical work, as is evidenced by the fact that much of it (such as the text above) was written in the second person. (Universally, theology texts are written in the third person with perhaps a scattering of first person dialogue, although, I have never encountered such.) As you ought to know, Father Feeney was a Lecturer in Rhetoric and Sacred Eloquence, so he, beyond a doubt, understood the Law of Non-contradiction.

So, what is Father saying above? If a justified soul dies without Baptism and does not go to Heaven and does not go to Hell, from a mathematical point of view, such a group of individuals must constitute a null set. That is, the union of the set of justified souls who die without Baptism who go to Heaven and those justified souls who die without Baptism who go to Hell is an empty set devoid of any actual persons, which means that all justified souls would have to die with Baptism. As Father states at the end of his paragraph, we cannot possibly know of any such justified souls who die without Baptism, because in order to know that, one would have to "prove a negative," that is, that someone died without Baptism. The ancient liturgy of the Church with respect to certain catechumens who (allegedly) died without Baptism is expressing the exact same hope that Father is expressing above -- that such justified individuals are not in Hell, which means that they must, by the Law of Non-contradiction, be in Heaven, which means that all such individuals must have died with Baptism.
