I sent this info below to Rorate Caeli. It became their special posting of the day. So, exactly what Church document forbids canines as sermon props?

Is this the same priest who once used a ladder as a prop? I also seem to recall you mentioning something about rafting or kayaking gear once too, but perhaps I'm mistaken.

This following post on Rorate, from "Hidden One" stood out to me; particularly the part about baptism:

Poodles should not play such a role in the Mass. Period.
His dictis, so as to supply a more complete picture of the priest in question, I would like to note that he has repeatedly written at length against the HHS stuff and in favour of pro-life activities etc., supported the corrected translation of the Novus Ordo, encourages his parishioners to go to Confession, has at least once publicly asked for forgiveness for his failings, writes publicly in support of true marriage and the necessity of baptism for salvation, has working to bring fallen away Catholics back to the Church, and maintains a Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

Truly, here is a priest who is well-meaning and who - outside of Mass - is working to do a lot of good. He is not our enemy. We must be very careful in writing or speaking about him.

Would you be able to shed any light on what this poster is speaking of?

Yes, this is the priest who removed his vestments during a homily, put on a ski jacket and Oregon Ducks ski cap, climbed the 8' ladder and delivered his sermon. I don't recall anything about rafting or kayaking.

Regarding the "Hidden One's" remarks, I do not read Fr. Holtzinger's blog, nor do I follow him on Facebook, nor have I heard his every sermon. I would not doubt that he has spoken against the HHS stuff, and is pro-life. When we get into the Missal translation however, "Houston, we have a problem". During weekend Masses prior to the implementation of the new translation, he provided instruction during his sermons. He also took the time to demonstrate, in his own mind, the weakness of the TLM and the subsequent superiority of the Novus Ordo. I called him on it via email. He does encourage Confession. He does speak well of the Eucharist, however I feel his actions betray his words. I have not seen nor heard him speak of the necessity of baptism. As for the adoration chapel, to intimate that he "maintains" it, is to not understand the history of the chapel itself. It is maintained by the sparse group of adorers, and has been in place for many years before he arrived. The group of adorers is now dwindling to such a degree that we are resorting to installing a tabernacle since there are so many unfilled hours. Father is not concerned by this. He has told me that there are many parishes that do just fine without adoration chapels. Clearly, he misses the point. Our own Mryan might wish to recount Father's notion of the Mystical Body of Christ. He cannot bring himself to say that "the Mystical Body of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church are one and the same thing". He has spoken against Fr. Feeney during a certain homily in which he predictably got the facts wrong.

If you're still interested, I encourage you to consider his own remarks in defense of the canine profanation, which he posted on Facebook (link below). By the way, the commenter "Mike Walker", who completely misses the point raised by "Mark Salvatore", is actually Fr. Mike Walker, another Mount Angel Seminary grad with a penchant for sermon props.

Thank you for supplying those details. The thread at facebook was telling as well.

I'm not sure where I came up with the rafting/kayaking thing, though. Hopefully it wasn't a premonition.

I think we should paws for a moment before hounding this priest, after all he was wearing his dog collar. He could have setter a better example but he did look quite fetching and maybe we should give him a Schnauzer chance.
We all know there is no dalmation outside the church.

I think we need to be more supporting if he likes props and isn't disrespectful in his intent. do we pray for him? Have we tried to be kind and explain why we think it would be better if he did something else? Any priest who promotes confession seems to be on the right track. St. Francis De Sales said you get more with honey than with vinegar.

“Damn't, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a..." Seriously, Jim, “vote with your feet,” and just leave. Right now my wife is attending a SSPX Mass that is a 70-mile drive from our home. (I am at home taking care of our disabled son.) Other times my oldest daughter will attend a local “extraordinary mass” that is offered at 7 AM. We give most of our money to this one, and if it should ever disappear, we'll disappear, also. Know that the parishes are “keeping tabs,” too!

Yeah this is probably the best way to treat it after addressing the priest that you were offended, saying it in a nice way. Very Happy

I have been attending a Ukrainian Greek Catholic parish pretty much exclusively now for going on a year and I don't regret it one bit. I don't know what your situation is out there in Oregon, Jim, but the Eastern Catholic route is always an option.

Dude actually looking at his blog he seems like a pretty orthodox priest
http://www.frbill.org/

I mean he promotes 24 hour Eucharistic adoration.

Also his post on baptism is interesting:

http://frbillblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/baptism-what-is-it-what-controversies.html

Also controversial is the Church’s claim that baptism is neces- sary for salvation. This theological statement is not something the Church made up, for indeed Christ himself affirmed this where he said that we must be born again of water and spirit (see John 3:5). This is the normative way we receive baptism. Yet, the Church also recognizes other unusual forms which include a baptism of blood (martyrdom) or desire (someone who is a catechumen or desires baptism but dies prior to receiving it).

(Emphasis mine)

Anyway, this is a positive starting point, at least he doesn't promote implicit baptism of desire.
