Folks we have to be realists and recognise we are living in strange times and have to use our own judgement more now than was ever required before, and thank God in this tecnological age we are not left without the means to know our faith if we so wish to know it. The Pope is still the Vicar of Christ on earth and I am duty bound to pray for him daily even when I am forced to ignore some of his ambiguios statements lest I take from them an incorrect meaning which the pope did not intend me to take. I will also be ignoring his forth-coming ecumenical assembly in Assisi which seems to go against the first commandment lest I take from it a meaning the pope did not wish me to take.

Am I being disloyal to the Church and endangering my faith by doing so?

Do we all want to be good Catholics and do the will of God? Do any of us want to disappoint or hurt Jesus? Do we desperately need the help of our Blessed Mother?

Maybe this weekend we could collectively pray to the Saints and Everyone in Heaven for better understanding and wisdom to help us in living our Faith.

My prayer this weekend was for better understanding and charity. Our grandson Wrigley, six years old will be doing this reading at Mass and was doing his practice out loud with me.

I saw all of us on this forum 'back in the day' in 4th grade class. Those were the days when everyone believed and took their faith as pure as taught to us by the Sisters and visits from the pastor or Assistant. Priests were plentiful then. Why we would do just about anything the nuns or Father would ask us to do. One day Father came in and said that I would all of you children to go home and paint your knees purple. So we went home and did as Father asked. The next day Father said does anyone know why I asked you to do that. Fatima for our Times hand stretched high said I know, I know. And why is that said Father to which Fatima replied because purple is the color for penance and this is Lent and we should spend more times on our knees. Exactly right said Father who presented Fatima with a laminated Holy Card for knowing the answer. Father then praised Jehanne for bringing his grade up so high in Religion after a slow start. You might just be another St Augustine in the making to which Jehanne had a big smile on his face. Father then turned to Mike and said that your parents must be very proud of you. Priests like me come and go but you understand that the Catholic church in the purity of its teachings through all the good and not so good times. Before Father left he said wouldn't it be a blessing if all of you in this class went on to become Saints.

Columba, I apologize for saying that I do not consider you a Catholic. I should not have done that. You are sincere and working through Our love for our Catholic Faith just like the rest of us. I MIGHT have some great news for you as I was praying this weekend. I know very little about Portugal but I do know that Our Lady promised that in Portugal the dogma of faith will always be preserved. I was just about ready to start checking out everything I could find out about past and more importantly present Catholic practices and how pure the faith is in Portugal when I stopped and said why not wait and have Columba research and give us his take on Our Lady's promise.

There is a poster from Portugal over at FE (I lurk there occassionally to hear views from a couple of members who's opinions I particularly respect) and he (the poster from Potugal) says that the state of the Church there is probably the worst in Europe.

Sr Lucy's begins the third part of the secret with the words, "In Portugal the dogma of the faith will be preserved etc." No one knows what comes after the 'etc' (except the pope and the other few figures who are privy to the whole secret). It could be, "In Portugal the dogma of the faith will be preserved 'IF' certain conditions are met,"
or, it could be any number of other things. The fact that Portugal is in no better state than anywhere else (even worse by some accounts) would have me guessing that there were conditions attached to Purtugal presrving the faith.

From all accounts the shrine at Fatima itself has become a kind of inter-religious free-for-all. I spent a week at Fatima in 2002 and to be honest I wasn't impressed with many aspects of the pilgrimage including Mass which was a bit like your typical NO in Ireland only with sun. The adjoining village of Aljustrel where Sr Lucy was born/lived was by contrast a pure oasis of peace.
