The TLM parish in my area had a little historical piece on the history of the parish interior in the bulletin this Sunday. It spoke of the practice of "pew rental". Families actually rented pews and they sat in the same place every Sunday. I did a quick Google search of the term "pew rental" and came up with this article

That is right. There was such a thing, and it still existed in my Archdiocese well into the sixties. As you entered the Church, there was something like a free standing poor box in the middle of the aisle and you put money in it before you went to your pew. There was no set fee by that time. I remember my late mother putting a quarter in.
