I don't know if I would call it sentimental. It seems more political than sentimental. I think he could really care less, as his dismissive attitude to the quote in question illustrates.

As a priest he is very influential, which I think causes him to be lazy with documentation.

Who says it is not from St. Augustine? Karl Rahner maybe? Fr. McBrien?

If these two are the ones calling it into question then I would doubt Fr. Z has ansturdy ground.

PS: Those who were wondering what the Latin in the quote said here is the English:

"A man cannot have salvation except in the Catholic Church. Outside the Catholic Church he can have everything except salvation. He can have honor, he can have Sacraments, he can sing Allelulia, he can answer Amen, he can possess the Gospel, he can preach faith in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: but never except in the Catholic Church will he be able to find salvation." ( St. Augustine, Discourse to the People of the Church at Caesarea , Migne, PL, 43, 689, 698; cf. Jurgens, The Faith of the Early Fathers, Vol. III, p. 130.)

Father Z is a moderator over at Catholic forum or something like that. He lives in Italy, or at least used to. One time around 10 years ago on his forum he said that Vatican II declared the Council of Florence to be wrong. I posted a reply stating that such an interpretation of Vatican II was incorrect, which he ignored. After that, I wrote a letter (hard-copy) to his bishop in Italy, but never received a reply.
