ARE THERE ONLY CATHOLIC SOULS IN PURGATORY?

Post  simple Faith on Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:43 am

I was thinking about purgatory, when I posed the thought to myself, as to whether or not only Catholic souls make it in to purgatory.
I'm not too sure if there is a simple and fast answer to my question (i.e. has the Church already definitely ruled on this issue).
Whilst I believe only Catholics make it into heaven, I was considering if it was possible for non-Catholics (e.g. members of an isolated jungle tribe) to make it as far as purgatory, and then, through the prayers offered by the Catholic Church for souls in purgatory, to eventually to be purified and released into heaven. If this was possible then these souls would have been saved through the Catholic Church, ... if you follow my logic.
Any thoughts, opinions or facts would be welcome.

I don't know if a soul can be converted to the Catholic faith in Purgatory if it hadn't done so before death.
As those in purgatory have already had their sins forgiven and are "merely" making restitution to God's justice, I'd reckon that before entering purgatory an unbelieving soul would have to have repented of its willful disbelief (for as the Lord says, "All who seek shall find"). If a soul hasn't found the truth while on earth it must not have (according to the promise of the Lord) sought that truth.

PS.

I can find many pre Vat II teachings on Purgatory but I can't find much in the line of Post VatII teaching with which to confirm the truth of the former.
The CCC in its second edition did actually include the word Purgatory somewhere.

Hello Simple Faith,

Good question. This probably goes to the heart of all the other discussions on No Salvation Outside the Catholic Church, Baptism of Blood , Baptism of Desire , Invincible Ignorance , aborted babies and other subjects that we have discussed. My understanding is that Jesus founded the One, One, Catholic and Apostolic Church as the only true Church. There is one and only one channel to Salvation. So I naturally see Jesus , when he says the words "That Thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build MY Church" as the perfection of God's plan for our salvation. Under this plan, I am both compelled and freely belief that you must be Catholic to be in Heaven. Bluntly said there are only Catholics in Heaven.

We will be totally sanctified and thus Holy to be in Heaven. If we die as Catholics free from mortal sin, yet with venial sin and imperfections, we must be cleansed in Purgatory for a finite period of time so that we are sanctified completely before we enter Heaven. I believe that there are only Catholics in Purgatory. Can Purgatory intercede for Heaven? That I can not grasp and leave completely to the Will, Mercy, Love, Justice and Mercy of God; as in our discussions on possibilities known only to God and "Hope" on such issues as aborted babies which are not fully developed by Holy Mother Church. Yes, this is 'Our Time' in the ability to save or not save our soul, but we are not entitled to any fast track explanations or development in Church teaching on demand. These developments will occur under the guidance of Holy Spirit. Look what it took to completely get our arms finally around the Immaculate Conception and these very words were spoken by Our Blessed Mother herself to Saint Bernadette.

Simple-faith,

At the risk of oversimplifying this, I think it is fair and doctrinally correct to say that any soul who makes it to Purgatory is already saved; therefore, he/she is already joined to the Church by at least the internal bonds of faith and charity as a member of the Church Suffering.

There is no need for a further "conversion" - the true faith was accepted before or at the point of death; it only remains to be purified and purged of one's sins ... and to pray for us.
